Describe the trip accurately
When asking an insurer about medical travel, explain that planned treatment is a purpose of the trip. Give the insurer the information it requests about the procedure and your circumstances. Ask for written confirmation of how the policy applies rather than relying on a general statement that you have travel insurance.
The NHS says most travel insurance policies do not cover planned treatment abroad and specialist cover may be needed. For UK travellers, GOV.UK also states that EHIC and GHIC cards are not valid in Turkey. These points make a policy-specific conversation important.
Split the questions into situations
A useful inquiry describes situations separately: cancellation before departure, illness unrelated to the planned procedure, a treatment-related problem, an extended stay and a changed journey home. Ask which, if any, the proposed policy covers and what conditions apply.
Do not convert a salesperson’s broad reassurance into a claim that a particular event is insured. Request the relevant policy wording and any endorsement. Store these with the written answers so you can check whether the response matches the document you would actually purchase.
Check the process as well as the cover
Ask who you must contact before arranging assistance or incurring expenses. Note the claims contact, the emergency assistance number and the information you would need to provide. Also ask whether a companion’s additional costs are considered separately.
Create a small coverage table with a row for each situation and columns for the insurer’s answer, conditions, excess and evidence. If an answer is unclear, leave it marked unresolved. This is more useful than a single tick beside the word insurance.
- Does the policy address my planned procedure explicitly?
- What exclusions or limits apply to related problems?
- Are extra travel or accommodation expenses considered?
- What assistance arrangements operate in Turkey?
- What documents and prior authorizations are required?
Keep clinic promises separate
A clinic’s guarantee, its professional insurance and your travel policy are different documents. Ask what each one covers, who decides a claim and whether travel expenses are included. Avoid assuming that one document fills every gap in another.
Use the answers to understand your exposure and compare options with an appropriately qualified insurance adviser if needed. This guide provides a question structure, not a recommendation for a policy or an interpretation of coverage. Your actual protection depends on the terms and your circumstances.
